Ruby on Rails is simply great!

I finally took my decision so i’m working on my idea developing it using Ruby on Rails. It really seems i took a good decision since everthing is fl;owing good. Getting started with Rails is pretty easy as soon as you start to understand how it works.

I was lucky. Rails 0.13 was released just before i started to get serious on learning it so here i have lovely new features for free! Ajax is already powering my project!

Now i’m considering to buy the Rails book… i only hear good comments about it.

Me on Ruby on Rails

Ruby on RailsI’ve been curious about it for monthes. Together with AJAX, Ruby on Rails is really getting a lot of buzz.

In my personal opinion the latter deserves its popularity even more than the first. It really is a robust, flexible and convenient framework to build web applications. Everything is just a bit of keystrokes away and combined with a good project analysis it can bring to great results in a fraction of the usual time.

Ruby really is a great scripting language but i can’t stop thinking about what would happen if a good framework was built on Python!

There’s something about AJAX

Everybody (well, at least web developers!) is speaking about AJAX and it really seems it’s going to change the web as we know it. But is it all gold shining?

In case you don’t know much (or anything) about this new technology i suggest you to take a look on Wikipedia and Adaptive Path, the company where Garrett (the smart guy who invented the lovely acronym) works.

Anyway, since an image is better than 103 words here’s a nice diagram (courtesy of Adaptive Path)

Ajax Schematics

So… what’s my opinion?

Actually i’m very curious about it. It is surely useful for a wide range of tasks but i doubt it will be the next big thing. No revolutions.

The reason of this opinion is in my belief on mobile computing. Mobile phones became smart phones and soon we will be able to surf the web (hopefully at affordable prices) from any place. I can see a bit problem about this. Lots of poorly designed websites, full of useless flash animations and so on…

Will these mobile devices be able to handle Ajax? This will depend on the implementation of Javascript.

Isn’t it more important to have a website that just works? I really think so! So this is my opinion and my hope… the next big thing: (X)HTML & CSS.
